Episode 15 of SpikeNet & Friends features Charles Norman, a Miami native, Team Florida coach, and the newest addition to the UCLA Bruins men’s volleyball program. From South Florida gyms to one of the biggest stages in college volleyball, Charles shares how he followed his love for the game all the way to Westwood.
From Miami to UCLA
Charles did not set out chasing a title or a top-five program. He simply focused on getting better every day, first as a player, then as a coach at Miami United, Barry, and Ball State. Now, after helping Ball State reach the Final Four, he is stepping into UCLA ready to learn, work, and help the Bruins chase another national championship.
Development over pressure
For Charles, pressure is not something to fear, it is a sign that you are in a meaningful moment. His biggest message is to focus on the daily work: practice by practice, rep by rep, and mistake by mistake. The goal is not to avoid errors; it is to learn from them and keep growing.
Growing the game the right way
The conversation also gets real about the growth of boys volleyball in Florida. Charles loves seeing more clubs, players, and national-level opportunities, but he reminds athletes and parents that development matters more than simply being on a “ones” team or winning the next local tournament. Get in the gym, compete against strong players, find meaningful playing time, and choose the environment that will help you improve.
Watch Episode 15 of SpikeNet & Friends with Charles Norman for an honest conversation about Florida volleyball, coaching, player development, the Team Florida experience, and what it takes to reach the next level.
